Event Description
Substance use during pregnancy remains a significant public health concern, with implications that extend across obstetric, neonatal, and family systems. Despite decades of research demonstrating that medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) improves outcomes for pregnant and postpartum people, stigma, fragmented systems of care, and inconsistent screening practices continue to create barriers to timely identification and treatment. These gaps in care contribute to preventable morbidity for parents and infants, as well as unnecessary family separation through child welfare involvement. This session offers a comprehensive, evidence-based overview of perinatal substance use.

Throughout the session, attendees will be encouraged to consider how clinical decisions intersect with policy and systems-level factors. Case examples and practical tools will be used to ground the information in real-world practice. By session's end, participants will have foundational knowledge of how to identify, treat, and support pregnant and postpartum people affected by substance use, and how to apply this knowledge in ways that improve outcomes for both parent and infant while supporting family integrity wherever safely possible. This session is offered at NO COST for members and is $15 for non-members. Registration is required.

This program is approved by the National Association of Social Workers (Approval # 886568283-6572) for 1 continuing education contact hours.
